Synopsis

Review

This is based on a true story. Through and through. There are obviously some differences, enhancements, and creative licenses, but that doesn’t mean that the sentiment isn’t what it should be. The story is very well told with the callbacks to early sections being paced well without forcing them down. This also gives something to anchor the actors to.

That is where this movie, specifically the cast, excels. Benedict and Kira are absolutely unbelievable in their performances. There are so many little events, expressions in the face and eyes, and speech functions that give them so much room to work in and so much room to show off their skills. Takes these two and add Charles Dance from Game of Thrones and Mark Strong who has been in everything, but my favorite in the Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. These two bring their own weight to this movie.

This movie also does something at the end that you don’t expect. It talks about the persecution of homosexuals in the UK that affected some of the greatest minds in the world at the time.

My Rating

I can’t express very well how much I enjoy this movie. There is so much history and emotion to it. I talked a lot about the weight of what the cast was doing, but the real people who did this saved us from a world run by fear. It is these people the U-571 was talking about regarding the sacrifices that were made. The intelligence to know that direct action would tell the Germans that the code had been broken is something that we sometimes don’t think about in today’s games of intelligence. This movie is a great portrayal of telling a hard story in an entertaining way. It is a 9.

Parental Rating

There is limit language, no real violence, and no sex. There is a conversation about homosexuality that I am not sure how my parents feel personally, but I know that their background is very rigid around it. That speaks to the movie’s content and I do think they’d watch it once. Based on the rules, I don’t see any issue with either one of them, but it isn’t a family movie per se. I am going to say approved by both.
